10 Tips for Overwhelmed Working Mothers to Feel Better

Mothers work very hard at home, taking care of the home and the family and when you add a career to that it would make her seem like a superwoman. It is very inspirational watching a mother balancing it all and making things work. However, they get overwhelmed too.

There comes a point where it all becomes too much and trying to juggle it all and keep all the balls in the air can be very overwhelming. There is a lot of advice out there on how to deal with it all but sometimes it just makes the feeling worse and you end up feeling like you are failing.

There is a different approach, using neuroscience and therapy to unlock inside yourself, your confidence, your sense of calm which will help with every aspect of your life.

1. Prioritize Sleep

Once you become a mother sleep becomes elusive. There is constantly interrupted sleep as your child grows and more and more sleep loses its priority. There are always things that need doing or something you want to catch up with when the children go to bed, but sometimes those things are not important.

When you get the opportunity to sleep take it. When you get the chance to sleep tell your brain to take full advantage of the time and enjoy the rest, do not stress about how many hours you got of sleep because it leaves your mind aware that it is tired and in the end, you become tired and overwhelmed.

2. Meditation

When you begin to feel overwhelmed a minute of meditation can do the trick. More time would be better but when you are working on a hectic schedule a minute of mindfulness will go a long way.

Take time to breathe and focus on the good things you need to happen and it will turn things around for you.

3. Celebrate the quality time you have with your  kids

In a day a working mum is all over the place, and sometimes quality time with the kids is not a long as you may want, it can be small snippets in the day with some affection, bath time, mealtime, a quick game, and a bedtime tuck in.

These moments mean a lot to children and they will appreciate it.

4. Be Grateful

When you take the time to look at the things you are grateful for each day, you can see the positives in your life and this helps to relieve stress because not everything is bad or going wrong. It keeps you moving.

5. Set reasonable targets

Sometimes we want to get everything done and done in a certain way. Being a perfectionist can leave one very overwhelmed.

Do what is necessary and what you enjoy doing, it will help you avoid overwhelming situations

6. Be careful what you tell yourself

Sometimes the voice inside your head can be very critical and push you too hard. Even though it may mean well in a motivating way sometimes it can push too hard and lead you to feel stressed and overwhelmed.

You do not always have to follow it, sometimes acknowledging it and sticking to it can help.

7. Tone your ventral vagal nerve

This nerve is the one that gives you a sense of safety, well-being, and that social link you have with your loved one.

By focusing on good memories of past events, things you have held dear to you, and people close to you it helps raise good feelings and helps you to let go of the stress.

8. A feeling can be just that, a feeling!

When we feel overwhelmed our bodies react too, sometimes the negative feeling is something you can overcome and not allow it to take control.

By telling yourself that it is not true and identifying that it is just a negative feeling you can rise above it and overcome the negativity.

9. Comfort your stressed-out parts

We feel different things in different parts of ourselves. This is why we use the phrase a part of me is happy and another part is sad.

When you identify the part that is overwhelmed, focus on that, and tell it all is going to be ok, to breathe and to calm down.

10. Slow down and breathe

This is a technique that has been proven to work for centuries. Our brains sometimes want to overthink a situation and make it worse.

But when you take time to breathe and focus on that while counting to five you will feel yourself calming down. This is something you can do when the stress levels are very high and you cannot think straight.

Some of these techniques may seem very strange but they work and science can support them. There is no harm in trying it out and taking control of those overwhelming moments.
